SEE-Math Information
In Fall 2008 Lipscomb University received a three year grant from the Tennessee Department of Education to fund summer institutes to enhance Tennessee middle grades and high school math teachers in mathematics content knowledge and pedagogy.
The summer institutes - SEE-Math (Student Engagement in Exploring Math) - are for teachers of mathematics grades 5-12. Institutes U and V are for middle school teachers interested in geometry, statistics, and problem solving. Institute Y is for high school teachers interested in pre-calculus, geometry, and problem solving, emphasizing ACT math content. Both institues focus on hands-on activities and content specific technology. The institutes are directed by Dr. Ben Hutchinson, former Dean of the Colleges of Natural and Applied Sciences at Lipscomb, along wth Dr. Randy Bouldin, Associate Provost for Graduate Studies, Dr. Carroll Wells, professor and Chair of the Math Department, Dr. Gary Hall, professor of mathematics, and Dr. Candice McQueen, Dean of the College of Education.
For 2009, twenty-six high school math teachers and fifty-two middle grade teachers were chosen to participate in the program from area systems. Another fifty-two middle grade teachers are in a control group and will participate fully in the summer of 2010.
